The garden was once again filled with experiments this year.  We fenced a new 4 acre garden site and focused most of our commercial production on the new site.  The new site was formally a canola field and it still looked like one for most of the season.  Our main focus was weed control, soil testing and amendment, and long term planning and planting of perennial crops.  We started a large asparagus patch, put in cherry trees, raspberries, and perennial flowers and herbs.  Our biggest challenge was getting the 9 foot deer fencing up and coping with a very cool and wet year.

In fall 2009 we moved an old brooder house

into the new garden site.

The house had perviously resided at our families homestead site, about a mile down the road.  The building is historic to our family as it was once used to raise chicks and later served at playhouse for the children of Anne and Walter Forth(our Grandparents)  Fondly named The Island In The Sun the building serves as storage and most importantly as a reminder that we are only stewards of this land.  Many in our family have cared for it before us and we pray many more generations will follow our example.

May 2010 the first of many posts was pounded

The new garden site took shape

A 9 foot fence was erected around the new site.  The fence is made of a plastic composite that we hope will last many years.  It appears invisible from a distance and was effective in keeping out all unwanted visitors.

There is not much glamour in planting

but it is very enjoyable after a long winter inside

We included a road up the center of the garden

Planting started late due to the need to finish the fence and the rains.  We included a road running through the center of the garden for vehicle access, this will be grassed in coming years.

A wonderful staff helped with all the weeding, picking and packing.  We don't pay much and we work you hard but everyone has a good time.
