There are many, many experiments in the garden this year, from the mixture of square foot plantings and rows, new veggies
and innovative irrigation to trying different found items to repurpose and new mulching practices. I'll try and show
you a few here.
We are taking gladiola to the market this year so I wanted to figure out how I could plant the most bulbs in the least
space and get great uniformity of flower. I guess only time will tell if it works. As of August 14 all goes well with
the glad crop.
First I dug a trench about 10 inches deep
I then filled the trench with about 2 inches of sand
bulbs were then planted on both sides of a support
Growing well July 6
we tied the glads us August 11
some blooms were showing
Another experiment is the use of raised beds and square foot plantings. The theory is that this will reduce weeding
and make the best use of small space. Some crop was seeded in 4 inch grids while others were broadcast seeded or raked
in.
